A Word for Today

Our Filter of Faith

As we navigate through the darkness with the help of the Light of the world, we are always facing certain obstacles that go 'bump’ in the dark. We hear things but we cannot see them and often our imagination overwhelms us with fear of what is out there. We have all been there at some point in the journey.

God’s word reminds us as often as we think on it or read from it that it is best to trust the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. As a result of those faith choices, we are directed through the darkness daily by the light of truth.

In recent weeks, I have been asked, ‘why would God do ‘this’?” (And you can put whatever you are tempted, tested, or troubled about for ‘this’)

It is important to understand there is a distinction between the temptation of evil and testing for good. The Word of God reminds us that God does not tempt anyone with evil. (James 1:13) However, while temptation does not pass through without oversight from God,. It is the adversary, the devil who uses temptation to cause human beings to stumble or even fall away from God’s best design. The devil’s desire is the destruction of all that is good, and the devil will twist what God made to be good in a way that when acted on causes evil to flourish and destroy life.

On the other hand, God uses tests and trials in our life to deepen trust, not destroy us. God permits the problems of life to teach us to stand on His word in every circumstance through trusting Him alone in faith. And through that, the believer is made stronger through exercising faith in His promises. God does His best work at the end of our strength, when we are exhausted or have used up all other means of help and resources. I wish it weren't that way but often it is. In the process God permits the things we come to trust in and lean on beside Him to be stripped away leaving His presence to rest in and His promise to rely on. Though often a painful life lesson, how is that not better for the journey of a lifetime?

When trouble comes, (and it does to all of us) count it all joy, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patient endurance in the journey. (James 1:2-3)

While nothing we face is without God’s oversight, the adversary the devil and the evil he plots against the crown jewel of God’s creation is the primary perpetrator of problems in this life. Therefore, God did not do ‘this’. He is using ‘this’ for good in all who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

So, when you are tempted it is important you recognize the ‘who’ behind it. And when you are tested remember as well the One who oversees it. During the journey when the darkness of uncertainty seems overwhelming, always remember, God will never lead you to do anything that is contrary to His Word. NEVER! The Word that never changes is our filter on which our faith is acted on!

As you live today, go out into the darkness with His light of truth. And when things ‘go bump’ in the shadows of uncertainty, be sure to filter what you thought you saw, heard or even imagined through faith believing with absolute certainty you never walk alone when you have the Light of the world within you!

Begin every day with a prayer for God to lead you through the darkness with the light of His presence. In response, His promise will prevail through our trust in Him as we learn to lean more on Him and not on our own understanding.

Blessings for the journey today!
