First Things @ First
I recently began working through Dr. David Jeremiah's material on 'The God You May Not Know.' He has a follow-up study on 'The Jesus You May Not Know' that I am looking forward to also.
It was during one of those morning sessions that I was reminded of the contentment that comes from understanding that God is sovereign. That term 'sovereignty' has been misused and abused throughout the years. Often used to divide people instead of uniting them under the authority of God's rule in their life. The division has come largely because no one can fully comprehend the scope of what the sovereignty of God includes. Truth is, no one ever will this side of the glory of God being fully on display in heaven. If you want to see that you will need first to be born again by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, the One and only Son of God and Savior of all who believe for salvation.
While we will never fully understand the scope of God's sovereignty here, we can better understand and benefit from it when we realize the meaning of the word. David Jeremiah sheds this light on God's sovereignty. He writes "the word sovereignty is one of the most triumphant terms in our vocabulary. 'Sov' is the Latin prefix for 'over and above.' God is Sov-Reign because He reigns over and above all, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come' (Ephesians 1:21). end
When you and I 'get' that God is 'over and above all' through the counsel of the Holy Spirit, it helps align the believer's attitude and action concerning worry. This truth also helps with the wringing of hands about things that appear to be spinning out of control around us or even within us.
A better understanding of the sovereignty of God provides peace and contentment in that no matter what happened or even will happen, God is on it and I do not need to sever fellowship with God through the sin of worry (Philippians 4:6). God is not early and never late in doing what He purposes concerning the world He created. That includes you, your needs, and the needs of all seven plus billion people that currently inhabit this earth. I know that sounds like a lot to manage, especially when considering each one is uniquely different by creation, but God is on it. He is over and above all of what we are facing, fearing, or find ourselves attempting to flee from. He alone oversees what is both visible and invisible perfectly.
Knowing better that He has oversight and the power to even overrule our misguided plans when necessary, then all we must do as believers is focus on continuing to come under His rule of authority in our lives daily. That is how you and I experience the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
As we gain a better understanding of God's sovereignty through immersing ourselves in the good news of God's word, we discover His source of supply a much better option than the news of the day, especially the news of the present day!
If what is going on around you has you tied up in knots, permit the Sovereign God of all there is or ever will be to help you understand that He is on it and over it! Then take a deep breath of His supply of peace and continue the journey knowing that what God started in you He will finish, perfectly in His time!
May the God of peace be with you all this week! Romans 15:33
